The purpose of writing is to express an idea, or an opinion. Writing is a convenient way to convey ideas and opinions. Conveying with a view to enlighten and entertain has been the main goal of many an author which includes the famous authors of yesteryear like Jules Verne, Charles Dickens, H G Wells, Herman Melville ... just to name a few.
Even a fictitious story, being a collection of ideas put together in a logical sequence is meant to convey an important message. [Er ... to some extent!] Those authors enjoyed their work and got about their tasks with much fervor, producing masterpieces.
One of the perks of these activities was profit, of course in many cases not sought but could not be avoided. Money does not cause any harm they say, of course not, in small quantities. These authors achieved worldwide fame and were immortalized by virtue of their valuable contribution to the world of literature.
